Raven Strings Summer Camp

Dates: June 10-14, 2024

Program Description: This program is designed for campers to receive instruction in the techniques of orchestral and small ensemble playing. Rehearsals focus on developing technique, rhythm, pitch, phrasing and leadership. The camp is project-driven, and student work culminates with an informal recital at the conclusion of the week. Time will be scheduled for lunch and snack outside (Weather permitting). All instructors are experienced strings teachers, as well as, professional performers.

*Please Note: Participants are required to have at least one full year of string instrument study through string class, private lessons or orchestra. The camp is open to all children, not just current Ravenscroft students.

What to Bring: Campers are required to bring their own instrument and should bring snacks and lunch daily.

Program Instructors:

Anne Leyland, a native of Pensacola, Florida, began her violin studies at the age of six with Anna Tringas, a former pupil of the late Ivan Galamian. She continued her studies at the Meadowmount School of Music, Louisiana State University, Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and Carnegie - Mellon University, where she obtained her Bachelor of Music degree with honors. Among her teachers was the late Fritz Siegal, former Concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Leyland has performed as soloist with the Pensacola Symphony, Ft. Myers Symphony, Congress of Strings Orchestra, and the Louisiana State University Orchestra. She has performed as first violinist in numerous orchestras, including the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet Orchestra, the North Carolina Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle and the Charleston Symphony. As a free-lance performer, she was first violinist with the Pittsburgh based Mezzanine String Quartet. Ms. Leyland currently is a violinist with the North Carolina Opera, is the Concertmaster of both the Durham and Tar River Symphonies, and Principal Second violin of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. Among her faculty appointments have been positions with Chatham College and Arts in the Parks in Pittsburgh. She is the Instructor of Violin at Saint Mary’s School, where she also directs the String Ensemble, and at Ravenscroft she is an Artist in Residence and teaches in the private lessons program. In addition to enjoying performing with her husband, Nathan, she has an active family life with their two boys, Sean and Max, and six cats.

Pamela Kelly received her Bachelor of Music Degree with Honors in Violin Performance in 1981, as a Morehead Scholar from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her Master’s Degree in Violin Performance from UNC-CH in 1983, during which time she was a Graduate Assistant in Violin. Her teachers include David Cerone, Aaron Rosand, Elaine Richey (assistant to Ivan Galamian), Richard Luby, and her mother, Joanne Bath. Currently employed by Ravenscroft School (Raleigh,NC), Mrs. Kelly works as both the Director/Conductor of String Ensembles for Middle and Upper School, as well as a Strings Instructor in the Ravenscroft Private Lessons Program. With experience in teaching violin, viola, cello, and bass, to preschoolers through college students, Mrs. Kelly has taught now for over four decades. Between 1983 and 2011, she developed the Suzuki Program at Meredith College (Raleigh, NC), was Director of Strings at Campbell University, and founded the Cape Fear Valley School of Violin (Dunn, NC) in 1983, which just celebrated its 33rd annual recital under her continued direction. An active clinician and adjudicator at regional and national workshops, competitions, camps, and institutes, Mrs. Kelly has been a faculty member at the NC Suzuki Institute since 1983, the North Carolina Chamber Music Institute since 2014.and the Lamar Stringfield Music Camp at Meredith College since 2015. As a violinist, Mrs. Kelly has extensive freelance experience, performing with Carolina Ballet, North Carolina Opera, Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, and over 30 years with the North Carolina Symphony. Mrs. Kelly is former concertmaster of North Carolina Theatre, Raleigh Symphony, and Durham Symphony, and is presently concertmaster for the Sandhills Sinfonietta. A resident of Dunn, Mrs. Kelly is married and has three grown children.

Tasi Matthews has been sharing her love of music with kids and adults in the Triangle area since 1997. She was a member of the adjunct faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill from 1997-2003, the Cary School of Music from 1997-2000 and has been the Director of the Lower School Strings Program at Ravenscroft School since 2018. In addition, Tasi has run a successful private violin studio at her home in Apex since 2000 and frequently coaches student chamber groups within the NC Chamber Music Institute program. When not teaching, Tasi performs regularly in the area. Currently she performs with the Nelson Quartet, Leechford Entertainment Groups, the Carolina Ballet and NC Opera Orchestras. She also plays frequently as a pit musician for the Broadway Series at the Durham Performing Arts Center and at Playmakers Theater in Chapel Hill. Previously she was the concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle and was also a violinist with the Greensboro, Durham and Raleigh Symphony Orchestras. Tasi has been fortunate, as well, to perform with some well-known artists such as The Eagles, Josh Groban, Clay Aiken, Mary J. Blige, Harry Connick Jr., Mannheim Steamroller and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Ms. Matthews earned her B.M. from UNC-Chapel Hill and her M.M. from the NC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Jason, and their three children, Collin, Owen and Regan.
